About the 9-Week Half marathon (Beginner)

A 9-week plan to run a strong half marathon, written for the Beginner level. It starts where you are, adds load gradually and mixes easy running with targeted sessions so you peak on race day.

Pick this quest if you can run 20–30 minutes without stopping and want to reach this distance comfortably. If that sounds too easy or too hard, choose a different level of the same goal below.

How the plan is structured

PhaseWhenFocus
BaseWeeks 1–3Easy aerobic running and strength work. Most runs at a conversational pace.
BuildWeeks 4–6Longer long runs plus one quality session a week: tempo, intervals or race-pace segments.
PeakWeeks 7–8The longest long runs and the most race-specific sessions of the plan.
TaperWeek 9Volume drops, a little intensity stays, so you start fresh and sharp.

What a typical week looks like

  • 3–4 runs a week.
  • Mostly easy runs at a pace where you can talk.
  • One session with short pickups or a gentle tempo.
  • A weekly long run that peaks at about 16–18 km.
  • Strength work once or twice a week to stay injury-free.

Not sure about your paces? Use the VDOT calculator or check your starting point with the training readiness test.

How the quest works

  1. Join the quest in the GetSetXplore app and your week-by-week plan appears on your calendar.
  2. Log each workout, or sync it from your wearable (Garmin, Suunto, COROS and more) or Google Health Connect.
  3. Every completed session builds your streak and earns XP. Milestones unlock rewards along the way.
  4. Miss a day? Skip it and carry on. Do not double up the next day.

Frequently asked questions

How many days a week does this half marathon plan need?

3–4 runs a week, with rest or easy days in between. Most sessions take 30–60 minutes. Long sessions take longer.

Is 9 weeks enough?

For the Beginner level, yes, if you start at the level described above. If you are behind that, pick a longer version of this quest or begin with a Run Ready quest.

Is this quest free?

Yes. Joining and following this quest is free in the GetSetXplore app. Pro (₹199 a month) adds automatic plan adjustments and coach messaging.

What if I miss a workout?

Skip it and carry on with the plan. Do not squeeze two sessions into one day. If you miss a whole week, repeat the previous week before moving on.
